A public event promoting the interaction between sport, health, design and the
community.
The program explores the Biennial theme of Winning by Design through:
- design projects and programs relating to sport and sports products
- design promoting solutions to obesity and encouraging healthy lifestyles
- design using everyday and recycled materials in objects, installations
and architectural projects.
Key activities:
Xtreme Fashion Parade
An experimental fashion parade of garments designed and manufactured
by CIT’s fashion Design students. The performance will include
a choreographed element featuring athletes from Canberra extreme sports
community.
Underfoot – Public Art Display
Be a part of the Canberra Biennial by bringing an old sports shoe to
Federation Mall and exhibiting it with others.
Mpowerdome
After 10 years of rigorous research and design development Canberra-based
company mpowerdome will launch and demonstrate an innovative health
and fitness solution program. The design of the equipment and programs
facilitate fundamental motor skill development, and accelerate the
development of young athletes for all sports. There will activities
for everyone, from the very young to the more mature.
Art and Design marketplace and workshop
Displays and workshops from the Australian National University School
of Art and the CIT art and design schools.
Virtual Gaming
Big Screen Game competitions plus workshops and talks on game development
and 3D design visualisation. Presented by the Academy of Interactive
Entertainment.
Throughout the event there will be entertainment including musicians
from the Australian National University School of Music and chilled
out sets from Canberra’s most innovative DJ’s. Food and
drink will also be available.

Walter Burley Griffin Memorial Lecture

This lecture has traditionally focused on the theme of the importance
of design in the National Capital and the role that architects play
in underpinning the international importance of Canberra’s original
design, by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin.
2007 is the 46th year of presentation. The lecture continues
to be the most distinguished architectural lecture in the ACT. The
2007 lecture is presented by John Denton of Denton Corker Marshall
Architects.

Lake Cruise Tour – Architecture around Lake Burley Griffin

The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) will take you
on a tour of the significant architecture on the shores of Lake Burley
Griffin.
Join RAIA architects as they talk
you through the design and significance of buildings such as the National
Gallery of Australia, High Court of Australia and the Carillon.
Departs from the jetty at design InTENTS Commonwealth Place foreshore.

Walking Tour - City West and Australian National University

Bus Tour - Architecturally designed elite
sporting facilities in the ACT

The RAIA ACT Chapter will
take you on a tour of Canberra's architecturally designed and award
winning sporting facilities.
The ACT is home to the Australian Institute of Sport and therefore
fortunate to have a bevy of architectural award winning sporting facilities.
Over the years, local and interstate architects have contributed to
the architecture and helped provide both state of the art training
and viewing facilities.
- Australian Institute of Sport Aquatic Testing and Training Centre.
- Australian Institute of Sport Services Hub.
- Canberra Stadium and National Indoor Sports Centre.
- MPower Dome.
At each site the original or an experienced architect will take you
through the design of the building.
The Bus will depart from the RAIA ACT Chapter 2A Mugga Way Red Hill

Public Lecture – Olympic Designs

2.00 – 3.00pm
In conjunction with the exhibition Olympic Cities: Designing for
Winning, urban designer and distinguished sports architect Lawrence
Nield will share his experience and expertise in Olympic planning
and design in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. Lawrence is principal
of Bligh Voller Nield architects.
His designs have won numerous awards, including the RAIA Sir Zelman
Cowan Award for Public Buildings in 1997 for his work on the University
of the Sunshine Coast Library and the Sir John Sulman Medallion for
the Sydney Olympic Tennis Centre.
Admission to the exhibition is free after admission to Old Parliament
